The Village Pubs — Closest to Your Pod

The Cadogan, Ingham (~2 miles). Our nearest proper pub, and a good one — an AA Rosette for its seasonal, locally sourced food, and beers from their own Brewshed brewery just down the road. Ideal for a Sunday roast after a morning at the Anglo-Saxon Village.

The Guinness Arms, Icklingham (~2 miles). A handsome 16th-century coaching inn with a landscaped garden rolling down to the River Lark. The bar welcomes dogs, and you can reach it on foot via one of the mapped walks from our site — the best kind of pub lunch is the one you've earned.

For a Special Occasion

Pea Porridge — Suffolk's only Michelin-starred restaurant (Michelin Guide), serving a daily-changing menu of charcoal-cooked, Moorish-inspired dishes from a pair of historic cottages on Cannon Street. Warm, unpretentious, and extraordinary. Book well ahead.

Bellota — a genuinely unique experience: a 20-seat counter around an open kitchen on Churchgate Street, where Spanish chef Ruben and his team cook, plate and serve every course themselves. Tasting menus only in the evening (six to seven courses, stretching to ten on Fridays and Saturdays), and already in the Michelin Guide. Book well ahead — twenty seats go quickly.

Maison Bleue — intimate, stylish modern French dining on Churchgate Street, with a particular way with fish. One of the town's longest-standing treasures and firmly in "anniversary dinner" territory.

The Angel — the grand ivy-clad hotel on Angel Hill, looking straight over the Abbey Gardens. Its Eaterie holds two AA Rosettes for its Modern British cooking, and afternoon tea here is a Bury St Edmunds institution. Dogs are welcome too.

Blue Fig (Abbeygate Street) — Mediterranean-inspired small plates and a well-chosen drinks list, right by the Abbey Garden gates. Made for sharing.

World Flavours in Bury St Edmunds

Amigos (Brentgovel Street) — our go-to for a lively night: award-winning Mexican with homemade tacos, fajitas and serious margaritas, using local ingredients. Book at weekends.

Sakura (The Traverse) — authentic sushi, sashimi and teriyaki inside the Grade I listed Cupola House, built in 1693. Dinner in a landmark.

Cheers ⭐ — steak cooked by you, at your table, on a sizzling hot stone. Great cuts, fun format, and a wine and sangria list to match.

Meat & Greet (Whiting Street) — a live-fire BBQ steakhouse from a much-loved local street food outfit, serving burgers and steaks from Dexter cattle dry-aged for at least 40 days. Open Wednesday to Sunday, and worth every flame.

Mowgli Street Food (Abbeygate Street) — vibrant Indian home-style cooking under fairy lights, with swinging chairs and chat bombs. Brilliant with kids.

Zap Thai (St John's Street) — a small independent serving fresh, bold Thai comfort food in a relaxed setting. Worth planning around: they open Wednesday to Saturday evenings (plus Saturday lunch), so book your Thai night accordingly.

Casual, Family-Friendly and Fun

Pommodoro ⭐ — a cosy Italian trattoria by the Abbey Gardens making fresh pizzas and pastas; lovely outdoor seating on a warm evening.

Slices ⭐ — bottomless wood-fired pizza for a set price. Arrive hungry, pace yourself, regret nothing.

Slim Chickens ⭐ (arc Shopping Centre) — hand-breaded tenders, 15 sauces, proper milkshakes. The reliable crowd-pleaser after a long day exploring.

Queens Bar & Grill (Churchgate Street) — home-made American-inspired food (burgers, ribs, bar nibbles) in an industrial-style setting with a bar, conservatory and garden. There's even a games room with a pool table and table tennis — dangerous territory after a couple of pints.

The Tollgate — a welcoming community pub with flame-grilled classics and a big garden for summer evenings.

Where We Go for Breakfast

The most important meal of a holiday deserves its own section — these are our personal morning haunts:

The Suffolk Cafe — our absolute favourite breakfast around, and the one we send guests to first. One crucial detail: open Monday to Friday only, so plan your weekday mornings around it.

Wright's — a lovely neighbourhood cafe doing proper brunch, posh cheese toasties and excellent Monmouth coffee. A very good reason to linger in town before the day's exploring.

Folk (Fornham St Martin, on the way into Bury) — deservedly popular, which is the catch: it's walk-ins only, weekend hours are limited, and it fills up fast. Go early, and go hungry.

Planning Your Night Out

  • Book ahead for Pea Porridge, Maison Bleue and the weekend favourites — Bury St Edmunds is a proper food town and tables go.
  • Getting there: most of these are in the town centre, a 10-minute drive from your pod. The Cadogan and Guinness Arms are practically on our doorstep.
  • Bringing the dog? See our dog-friendly guide — Bury St Edmunds was crowned the UK's Most Dog Friendly Town, and plenty of these venues welcome four-legged diners.
  • Rather stay in? Every unit has its own BBQ, and the smokeless fire pits (£25 with a bundle of wood) turn dinner into an evening.

Menus, hours and ownership change — if you find a venue has changed (or discover somewhere better!), tell us and we'll update this guide. We eat out locally more often than we should, so ask us on arrival for this week's honest picks.
