Pod Hollow: A Real Hobbit House Stay in Suffolk

If you've ever dreamed of staying in a hobbit house, Pod Hollow is as close as it gets — a genuine underground house built into a grassy knoll in Suffolk's ancient woodland, complete with a round wooden door, circular windows, and a wildflower meadow growing on the roof.

Hand-built and one of a kind, this hobbit-hole-style hideaway at West Stow Pods is the only underground glamping stay of its kind in East Anglia — and at just 90 minutes from London, it's the closest hobbit house experience to the capital. Most hobbit-style stays in the UK are in the Lake District, Scotland or Cornwall; ours is a comfortable drive from London, Cambridge and Essex.

Inspired by the cosy underground homes of Tolkien's world, Pod Hollow combines storybook charm with proper comfort — making it one of the most unique places to stay in the UK.

Inside Your Underground Retreat

Pod Hollow is no ordinary glamping pod. Burrowed into the earth, which keeps it naturally cosy all year round, this eco-friendly earth house sleeps up to five guests — two bedrooms, each with a king-size bed and a premium Eve mattress, plus a single sofa bed in the sitting room.

Inside you'll find:

  • A real fireplace for cosy evenings and fireside storytelling
  • A fully fitted kitchen with hob, oven, fridge, and microwave
  • A 55-inch 4K OLED smart TV — because so many guests settle in for a Middle-earth movie marathon, we fitted the best screen for it
  • Premium Eve mattresses on both king-size beds for a proper night's sleep
  • An en-suite shower room
  • Curved walls, wooden beams, and round windows throughout

Outside, hire one of our smokeless fire pits (£25 including a large bundle of firewood) for toasted marshmallows under some of the darkest skies in England — perfect for stargazing.

What Makes Pod Hollow Different

Guests searching for hobbit hole accommodation in the UK usually face a long drive north or west. Pod Hollow offers something the others don't:

  • Closest to London — 90 minutes by car, 4 miles from Bury St Edmunds station
  • Sleeps 5 — most hobbit-style stays sleep only two
  • Dog friendly — bring the whole family, four-legged members included (£24 pet cleaning fee)
  • Open year-round and fully heated — winter stays by the fire are arguably the best
  • A genuinely private woodland setting — set within the trees, not beside them, on a small independently-run site featured in The Guardian's Top 10 UK Glamping Sites

One Tripadvisor reviewer called it "a dream come true for any Tolkien fan" — and with over 500 five-star reviews and a Travellers' Choice Award, they're not alone.

A Storybook Setting in the Suffolk Countryside

Your stay isn't just about the house — it's about the setting. The reconstructed West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village is five minutes away, where you can wander early medieval houses and try on period costume. The King's Forest begins on our doorstep, with miles of walking trails, and Lackford Lakes nature reserve is ten minutes down the road. Bury St Edmunds — with its cathedral, Abbey Gardens, market, and excellent restaurants — is just four miles away.

There's even hidden literary history in our woodland: a set of tangled tree roots said to have inspired an illustration in the first edition of Peter Pan, after J.M. Barrie visited the West Stow schoolhouse in the 1890s. A fairytale house in a storybook landscape.
